Why do we need Common Core Standards???
Major Shifts In Mathematics
FOCUS - Standards are going from a mile long and an inch deep, to DEEPER. Teachers will focus on a more narrow range of topics. As a result, students will gain a deeper understanding of concepts, stronger foundations, and a higher degree of skills and fluency. Slow down to teach more.
COHERENCE - Standards allow for a logical progression across grade levels allowing students to build upon prior knowledge.
RIGOR - The standards call for students to develop conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and flexibilty in application. Teachers will challenge students by incorporating higher depth of knowledge, allowing time for mathematical discussion, and providing opportunities to apply math in context.

Most of us remember the days of timed multiplication tests. You either loved them or loathed them. While memorization of basic facts will always be an essential skill, speed of recall has less importance as being able to apply knowledge of basic facts consistently. The item to the left is a sample item from Smarter Balanced that effectively assesses fluency of addition and subtraction facts.
